UriSAF App and The Uriscope

Urine tests are among the most recommended tests that should be done during Antenatal Care visits, but due to understaffed health facilities in Uganda and Africa at large, delays in receiving test results are the reason expecting mothers overlook and do not have such tests done. Current practices involve using chemical-based reactions like non-biodegradable coloured dip sticks which rely on human observation for diagnosis, but these tests have their limits.

Labtech have developed a hardware and mobile application-based solution called UriSAF for effective diagnosis and monitoring of urine changes for expecting mothers in low resource hospital settings.UriSAF and the Uriscope quickly and accurately tests urine to pick up on infections. The Uriscope uses pH and infrared sensors to test the urine. Within three minutes, the results are sent to the UriSAF mobile app which displays the diagnosis in English or one of four Ugandan languages.

The hardware module called “Uriscope” can diagnose urine samples for a range of issues from diarrhoea to kidney failure to gestational diabetes. UriSAF also integrates a phone application that receives data from the hardware once testing is done, and then processes the data to give a diagnosis whilst also allowing for safe data storage on the Cloud, for future further analysis or  shared with a doctor. The app provides tools that track the fetus’ growth, information about stages of pregnancy, possible weight and height of the fetus, immunization calendar, family planning and nutrition calendar for both mother and baby. UriSAF is a simple sensor based diagnostic tool, so health facilities are better able to carry out several timely tests without patients having to wait in long queues.
